Talc in the lung (Drug Abuse)

Drug abuse. Injecting drugs (heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine...) that are frequently "cut" with talc will cause serious damage. This photograph shows talc that has traveled through the blood stream and has ended up in the lung of this individual.

Notice the foregin body reaction. Inflammatory cells have surrounded the particulate material in efforts to rid the body of it (white refractile talc) and in so doing has scarred (thick pink areas) and damaged the alveoli.
