This was a cancer that arose in the placenta during pregnancy.

If you are familiar with hos placenta looks under the microscope, you will see that the cancer still has the pink cuboidal cells with one nucleus ("cytotrophoblast") and bigger cells with several nuclei ("syncytiotrophoblast").

The cells here are cancerous. You can tell this by their bizarre nuclei. There are no healthy-looking villi to reassure us that this is benign.

Since half of the genes of these cancers come from the father, the patient's immune system has more hope of fighting the tumor than in most cancers.
