Unit I What's Expected of a Brother Lambda Chi Alpha äPZ -- Spring, 1993 INSTRUCTIONS: Here are questions to help you, the new Associate Brother, get better acquainted with the fraternity. After the Unit I presentation (Wed., Feb. 3, 6:30 PM at the house), please set aside some time and try answering them along with your Big Brother. If that isn't possible this week, find another Initiated Brother. This is not an exam, and your answers will not be made public. Most of these questions are open-ended, without specific right-or-wrong answers. Comparing your answers with your Big Brother's should be fun. WELCOME! * * * What do the following terms mean, as used by Lambda Chi Alpha's? active brother associate brother badge fraternity secrets hazing initiated brother pledge Mention situations in which you might need to act to ensure the physical safety of one or more of your brothers. You should be able to think of at least ten. Where are the fire extinguishers at the fraternity house? How do they work? If you were on the second floor, and a fire broke out on the first floor, how would you escape? What can you do to make sure that fraternity membership has a positive, rather than a negative, impact on your academic achievement? Why does Lambda Chi Alpha take such a strong position against the use of all illegal drugs? Mention several reasons. What are laws? (Philosophers have argued this for 2500 years!) How are fraternity laws (chapter, national) like university regulations and government laws (local, federal, international)? How are they different? Is the law constant or changing? What are some reasons to comply with university regulations and government laws? What less-than-completely-favorable images of social fraternities do people have? Based on what you've seen (us, others), how much of this is in keeping with the reality? When something really bad happens around a fraternity house or a group of fraternity members, what is the public's response? To what extent is this justified? What do you understand by the word "gentleman"? The word "lady"? What is the relationship between these terms? Where does "good-fun" stop and "nasty-hurtful" begin? Think of some examples of both. What problems could result if a group of brothers acted crudely or insultingly towards a woman who was present? How many of the other campus Greek organizations can you name? How do you feel about the other campus Greeks? When outsiders are present, why is it generally a good idea to speak only good of fellow- Greeks? Are there exceptions? How else can we encourage respect for the entire Greek system? Why does Lambda Chi Alpha require a minimum grade point average? Think of several reasons. What is the grade requirement for initiation? To hold office? To continue as an associate or active member? How much are monthly dues? What happens if you do not pay dues on time? If you are more than ten days late? What other fees are there? Lambda Chi Alpha was the first national fraternity to abolish hazing. How come? Why do you think fraternities began hazing during the 1800's? Why do you think some fraternities haze today? What justifications have your heard for some of the practices? What else might help explain this kind of behavior? When should we wear our letters? When is it optional? When do we remove our letters? When is the Formal Association ceremony? Why do we call it an "open" ceremony? Do you know what promises you will be asked to make there? What do we mean by "abiding by the decisions of the fraternity"? Cite some examples. Can you sing "We're All Good Brothers / Hip Hip Hurray"? Kappa's Challenge: Design (but do not necessarily execute!) a humorous stunt, gag, or prank that does not violate the letter or spirit of the Zeta Code or the national inter-fraternity standards of conduct. Feel free to share your idea on the "Comments" section of the Report Sheet. WHAT WAS EXPECTED OF A KNIGHT OF "THE ORDER OF THE CRESCENT"? "Moreover, I exhort you out of brotherly love that you hereafter have regard for the dictates of your conscience rather than for any other consideration, that you may please God and that in this world it may help you to do these things which may be to the honor and profit of your body and soul. "For the rest, to venerate and honor the Christian religion and its ministers; "To sustain the right of poor widows and orphans; "Always to have pity and compassion on those in the lower walks of life; "To show courtesy and good will to all, in word and deed; "To slander no woman whatever for any reason whatever; "When you would say anything, to think first, lest you be found untruthful; "To flee all dishonest company and encounters so far as in your power lies; "To pardon willingly and not to hold spite in our heart toward anyone, in all cases which do not nearly touch your honor; "To study to make yourself worthy; so that your honor and fame may be in the crescent always from good to best, [and I say this] notifying you that all the good deeds and acts of prowess which have been done or shall be done by your manliness and the valor of your person shall be, while you are in good standing, written and registered in the chronicles of the Order, for perennial memory." -- Ren‚ of Anjou, 1448 A STATEMENT OF FRATERNAL VALUES AND ETHICS Basic Expectations In an effort to lessen the disparity between fraternity ideals and individual behavior and to personalize these ideals in the daily undergraduate experience, the following Basic Expectations of fraternity membership have been established: I I will know and understand the ideals expressed in my fraternity Ritual and will strive to incorporate them in my daily life. II I will strive for academic achievement and practice academic integrity. III I will respect the dignity of all persons; therefore, I will not physically, mentally, psychologically or sexually abuse or haze any human being. IV I will protect the health and safety of all human beings. V I will respect my property and property of others; therefore, I will neither abuse nor tolerate abuse of property. VI I will meet my financial obligations in a timely manner. VII I will neither use nor support the use of illegal drugs; I will neither abuse nor support the abuse of alcohol. VIII I acknowledge that a clean and attractive environment is essential to both physical and mental health; therefore, I will do all in my power to see that the chapter property is properly cleaned and maintained. IX I will challenge all my fraternity members to abide by these fraternal expectations and will confront those who violate them. -- National Interfraternity Conference 1988 WE'RE ALL GOOD BROTHERS We're all good brothers, Each one the others' friend, And we'll be good brothers, Until this world shall end; So while we're together, Let's give a rousing cheer For Lambda Chi Alpha, The bond we hold so dear. HIP HIP HURRAY Let's give a hip hip hurray For dear old Lambda Chi, Let's give a hip hip hurray, We'll shout it to the sky, We'll make the rafters ring, When all the brothers sing About the cross and crescent. It's the grandest thing, We'll shout it loud and strong, We'll shout it all day long Because we want the world to know We stand together now, We stand to win and how, For dear old Lambda Chi! Hey 1 2 3, Hey 1 2 3, Hey 1 2 3, Hey! NOTE: We're all Good Brothers and Hip Hip Hurray are typically sung in sequence. If that isn't possible this week, find another Initiated Brother. Once again, this is not an exam, and you answers will not be made public. The Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity sets as its supreme goal, contribution in the largest measure possible to the pre-eminence of truth and justice and the well-being of human kind. Toward this end, it is the aim of Lambda Chi Alpha to develop in its members the highest standards and acts of honor, chivalry, unselfishness, tolerance and industry and loyalty to Christian principles, the laws and established moral code of the nation, the democratic principles of the American educational system and the laws, traditions, standards and practices of this Fraternity. It is a fundamental principle of this Fraternity that no finer means is offered for the achievement of these aims than the brotherly association of men with similar tastes and inclinations. Founded with abiding faith in the innate honor, justice, social instincts and common sense of the normal college man and in the close communion of kindred hearts as an incentive to honorable action, it is, therefore, the policy of this Fraternity vigorously to contribute toward the accomplishment of the following specific purposes: a. To inspire appreciation for, to encourage the practice of and to nurture loyalty and devotion to Christian and other normal or religious principles consistent with the ideals of Lambda Chi Alpha. b. To encourage and inspire fraternal feeling and cooperation and to form unselfish and loyal friendships among its members. c. To establish and foster the highest ideals of manly character and gentlemanly behavior, to appeal to and develop man's nobler sensibilities, and as far as possible, to instill deeply in the hearts and minds of its members such ideas of thought and behavior as will contribute toward these ends. d. To develop the higher qualities of the mind, to nurture respect for learning, and to encourage and reward singular achievement in the field of scholarship, working at all times in harmony with the best in the American educational system. e. To provide clean and wholesome homes and recreation for its members while in college. f. To render such other services to its general membership as may seem feasible and as may be in harmony with the other aims of the Fraternity. g. To contribute definitely toward the spirit of democracy in the college fraternity system and to operate without offense or injury to anyone, working according to a positive and progressive plan rather than a negative or reactionary program. h. To encourage its members to carry into their experiences and relationships the objectives herein defined as a means to improving their professional, social and community environments both during and after their collegiate experience. i. To maintain an order whose ritual and symbolism shall be secret. -- Constitution and Statutory Code, 1990 ALL HAIL All hail, all hail to Lambda Chi, Our fair fraternity. We'll laud her praises to the sky Wherever we may be. In east and west, in north in south, You'll find our faithful band, For colors purple, green, and gold We pledge both heart and hand. Oh crescent set with stones of white, Shine out to light our way, Oh cross and crown of pow'r and might, Lead us aright for aye. With swords of strength we'll fight for right, 'Till mid the battle's din, The truth of our fair Lambda Chi O'er ev'ry foe shall win. HYMN TO LAMBDA CHI ALPHA Here we pledge our hearts together, to Lambda Chi, Naught from thee our love shall sever, our Lambda Chi. All our lives and works shall praise thee, As aloft our songs we raise thee, While his tribute each man pays thee, Dear Lambda Chi. I will guard thy honor ever, fair Lambda Chi, Failing in thy precepts never, my Lambda Chi. And whene'er I'm called to serve thee, Oh, my master, wilt thou nerve me, And forbid that aught should swerve me, From Lambda Chi. LOYALTY SONG To the standards high of Lambda Chi Ever true and faithful be with a steadfast loyalty, Let her banners fly to the lofty sky, There to float throughout eternity. And when evils assail her don't fail her, but rally to her call. Take your stand and die for Lambda Chi, For we are the best of all. Have a faith to do with the purple hue As your guardian and your friend who'll be with you to the end, And the noble green, let it ever mean That your courage will all else transcend; Spread the gold of devotion from ocean to ocean great and small. Take your stand and die for Lambda Chi For we are the best of all. Brotherhood is for the hard times as well as for the good times. Your Kappa's observations here and in the next unit are, occasionally, "controversial". They are based on reading in science (not politics), and personal experience as a physician and pathologist. They are also not intended in any way to be a comprehensive treatise on any subject or a substitute for your own physician's care and wisdom. Chalep… t… kala'. * * * From the Recent Medical Literature With Occasional Comments by your Kappa "During the past ten years, drinking and problems related to drinking and driving have gradually decreased among college students." The percentage of heavy drinkers is unchanged. 85% of underage college students drink, compared with 75% of legal-age students. Pub. Health. Rep. 103(6): 667, 1988. 84% of students at Tuscaloosa drink. 14% meet article criteria for heavy drinkers. The heavy drinker group contains an overabundance of white men and fraternity members. The more you drink, the more likely that it will get you in trouble. Int. J. Add. 24(9): 829, 1989. 85% of men at East Carolina State are regular alcohol users by age 18. Only 6% intended to stop drinking when a 21 law went into effect. Int. J. Addict. 23(6): 629, 1988. Dartmouth now has a "Good Samaritan" rule that if you are intoxicated and seek police or medical help, or if you got somebody drunk and get them help, you are immune to any penalty for being drunk or having gotten the other person drunk. This seems to work well. J. Am. College Health 40(6): 299-301. "Woman constitute half as many heavy drinkers as men, but report an equal amount of alcohol-related problems in this sample." J. Stud. Alc. 51(6): 536, 1990. "Beginning to drink at an early age and growing up with a heavy drinking father are strong predictors of both current heavier drinking and alcohol-related problems. For males, the effect of father's heavy drinking is especially strong. Furthermore, living in a dorm as a college student makes a unique contribution to alcohol misuse." Int. J. Addict. 27(8): 917, 1992. If you've had >5 drinks on >1 occasion in the past 2 weeks, your attitudes and behavior are likely to cause trouble for you and those around you. JAMA 267(21): 2929, 1992. Jocks drink more, have more sex partners, use condoms less, get more sexually-transmitted diseases, and are more likely to drive drunk, at least in California. J. Fam. Pract. 33(6): 585, 1991. "Minimal differences exist in drinking behaviors of athletes and non- athletes", but jocks have much more negative attitudes toward drinking, at least in Mississippi. [Yeah, sure.] J. Drug Ed. 21(2): 107, 1991. "Frequent heavy drinkers, cocaine users, and students with psychosocial problems appeared dis-proportionately among students planning to join fraternities and sororities", at least in Virginia. S. Med. J. 84(1): 13, 1991. In the past week, 4.7% of Dartmouth students drank daily, 4.4% had a blackout, 7.5% threw up from drinking, and 25.5% had a hangover. J. Stud. Alc. 51(5): 389, 1990. "Twenty percent of the male students and 6% of the females admitted having caused at least some damage to property after having been drinking in the past 12 months". Br. J. Add. 85(4): 479, 1990. "The greater the quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption, the greater the likelihood of experiencing alcohol-related problems regardless of an individual's sex, race, or year in college." ["No spit", Sherlock!] Int. J. Add. 24(9): 829, 1989. 90% of students at U. of Delaware continued to drink despite an age-21 law. Drinking among campus Greeks declined moderately. However, drinking-related physical injuries among all students increased significantly; this was attributed to drinking having moved to less- controlled environments. J. Am. College Health. 38(6): 263, 1989. Your research dollars at work! Around 30% of campus injuries are alcohol-related, and incredibly, "most alcohol-related injuries occurred after hours and on weekends." J. Am. College Health. 37(5): 205, 1989. For some mysterious reason about which top-level academic researchers at your Kappa's alma mater could only speculate, college students are more likely to forget to use condoms if they are drunk. J. Sub. Abuse. 3(1): 91, 1991. Taken while binge drinking, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can turn off your kidneys temporarily. This is unpleasant and can be dangerous. Am. J. Kid. Dis. 20: 281, 1992. * * * The most significant change in campus drug use patterns between 1972 and 1986 is a sixteen-fold increase in the number of students who have used cocaine more than ten times. Alcohol is also the most-abused drug on college campuses and in our society in general. All told, alcohol causes more problems than any other drug of abuse, including tobacco. There is no question any more that heavy alcohol use by itself can and does permanently damage the brain. The problem's not so much that brain cells are destroyed (that's largely bunk) but that they are damaged ("loss of dendritic spines"). Check out Alc. & Alc. 25: 467, 1990; Exp. Neurol. 106: 156, 1989. Legal drinking age in both Kansas and Missouri is 21. While the law is not 100% followed by college students, your Kappa recommends that (1) you obey the law, and that (2) regardless of your age, if you drink, drink sparingly. Alcohol causes the large majority of auto fatalities. Thankfully, today it's considered correct and even smart to designate one party- goer as designated driver. This participant remains cold-sober. It takes about 5 beers or 5 shots of 80 proof liquor in rapid succession for many men to reach the "legal" level of intoxication (100 mg/dL), but impairment of judgment and coordination occur at much lower levels. Watch for a lowering of acceptable driver's blood alcohol levels to 50 mg/dL or even lower. Most people metabolize alcohol at a rate of 15 mg/dL/hr. That means you burn off the equivalent of 1 beer or 1 shot of the hard stuff in 1 hour. Habitual drinkers handle the stuff much more rapidly, and there's much variability among people. Some drinkers (it's probably hereditary) eventually reach a point in which they cannot stop drinking once they have started. This is a sure sign that it time to stop drinking, now, for the rest of your life. You will also need some help doing this. Help is available. Despite the existence of many profitable-trendy "counselling centers", etc., etc., the best help is probably still "Alcoholics Anonymous". On not becoming a victim of homicide Despite the epidemic of random violence, especially in our cities, in recent decades, most homicides are still committed by someone the victim knows. Your Kappa is no expert on security or crime prevention, but he's had considerable reading and professional experience relating to homicides. The following suggestions will not make you immune to becoming a homicide victim, but will greatly reduce your risk of dying at the hand of someone you know: 1. Don't bully anyone, physically or verbally. 2. Don't ridicule anyone. 3. Don't try to take another person's wife or girlfriend. 4. Don't crowd or speak rudely to a person who is obviously upset, even if he or she is threatening you or someone else. 5. When you are in a relationship and it breaks up, be tactful and kind to the person to whom you were important. 6. Don't deal drugs. 7. Don't do sexual things for money or drugs. 8. Men: Don't carry a weapon. [ 9. Women: Don't be a sexual tease. 10. Gay men: Don't do sexual things with men you don't know well, or with jealous (i.e., nutty, insecure) men. Don't proposition men you don't know well. 11. Children and teens: If your parents are nuts, pretend you love them anyway.] NOTE: Alcohol is a factor in a majority of homicides. Certain men, under the influence of alcohol, are prone to fire their handguns at other people for no reason. Even when there is some motive, a majority of murderers have alcohol on board at the time of the crime, and a majority of victims have alcohol on board. NOTE: When there is a motive for murder, other than disputes among drug-culture types, sex is usually involved, and somebody has hurt the murderer's self-esteem. On avoiding becoming a suicide: Here's a list of principal reasons people take their own lives. This pathologist's impression is that this is approximately the sequence from most-common toward least-common. It is not exclusive, but covers the large majority of cases. 1. Failed relationship (any age, either sex) 2. Organic mood disorders (young and middle-aged adults) 3. Financial disaster (adult men) 4. Chronic poor health (teens and adults, either sex) 5. Abuse by a parent (older children, teens) 6. Fear of being a homosexual (teens and up, mostly men) 7. Bad body image (teens, younger adults) 8. Schizophrenia (teens and adults, either sex) School failure is probably less common than any of these causes of suicide. Athletic failure is also less common. NOTE: Alcohol is a contributing factor to the crisis that precipitates the suicide in at least 1/3 of cases, probably more. NOTE: Illegal drug use will exacerbate any of the above problems. NOTE: Among physically-healthy young people who attempted suicide and failed, 99% are pleased, one year later, that they failed. On depression: There are a variety of causes of depression, but the symptoms are the same. There is a feeling of hopelessness, low self-esteem, poor concentration, poor performance, and thoughts of suicide. Depression is extremely common in our society. Common "reactive depression" generally follows a blow to self-esteem, a frustrating work or home situation, or feeling you can't meet your responsibilities. Procrastinating and poor time-management are very depressing in the long run. If you're up to your neck, work very hard and aggressively dig your way out of your backlog. You can do it, and it will be easier than you think. If the depression is unrelated to life experience, you could very well have a wiring problem. Maybe some medicine, or even a change in lighting, is the answer. Today's physicians are good at solving these problems. On quitting tobacco use: Nicotine is probably more physically addicting than any other substance. Some people can quit by will-power. Most cannot. The "nicotine patch" is the current wonder-remedy. Give it a try. On the illicit drugs: "All drugs are poisons. All poisons are potential drugs." Your Kappa has been observing the drug scene for the past quarter-century. In my honest, considered opinion, the recreational use of today's illegal drugs has nothing to recommend it. Even experimenting a little with cocaine, even "to help you study", is extremely dangerous. Apparently cocaine use destroys your capacity to be happy without the drug. The cocaine addict will do anything to get more of the drug. The benzodiazepines ("Valium", etc.) are amnesic drugs. You won't learn well while you're taking the stuff "for test anxiety" or anything else. Today's "more sophisticated" exam-takers are choosing propranolol, a heart poison, instead. Really stupid. The management of patients with chronic pain is only now receiving the recognition it deserves from the medical profession. Heroin may perhaps have some use in the management of chronic pain, but the discussion is totally dominated by ideological concerns. Today, however, most people choose heroin as a powerful anesthetic against deplorable living conditions. It works, but the problems only begin with impotence.... Marijuana smoking, a "political" act during the 1960's, seemed to make its users unmotivated, and your Kappa suspects this means it causes subtle brain damage. It's also supposed to be easily the best way to overcome the dreadful subjective side effects of cancer chemotherapy. Again, science takes a back seat to politics, and nobody's doing meaningful scientific work with marijuana today. On not being crazy: There's no room for a course in psychiatry here. One percent of humankind suffers from schizophrenia, one percent from major organic mood disorder, one percent have panic attacks, and two percent from obsessive-compulsive disorder and variants. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Most forms of craziness probably result ultimately either from minor problems with brain wiring, previous psychological or physical abuse, or lack of opportunity to learn various living skills. Unlike the world of the 1940's, today's psychiatric therapies are highly effective. Every physician I know has someone with whom he can share his most intimate thoughts and feelings, with the aim of gaining better insight and control. Do not hesitate to seek this kind of consultation if you are at all concerned about the contents of your mind. * * * There's a proverb, "Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone." Comment. What's something dangerous that you have done? Did a friend ever help you stay safe? Did you ever do something to ensure a friend's safety? What are the signs that someone's drinking is likely to cause harm? To be out of control? Hint: Review the attached "Cross and Crescent" article. How would you deal with a brother in whom you recognized a drinking problem? How can a person who has been drinking decide when he is safe to drive? How can you tell that someone who has been drinking should not drive? Have you ever taken away someone's car key? Have you ever known anyone who seemed out of control of his anger? How would you deal with such a person? If he were a brother, what special resources would be available? How would you know if a brother were considering suicide? What would you do if you suspected? How would you recognize and deal with an acutely suicidal brother? How would you deal with a brother whom you suspected of using illegal drugs? How would you deal with a brother who was hallucinating or delusional? HINT: It's temporal lobe encephalitis until proven otherwise, and in this treatable illness, minutes count. Sing "With Dear Old Lambda Chi". This is an easy, corny, fun song. Kappa's challenge: If you are a drinker, try going "without" for a week, a month, or however long. Always be "designated driver". If you are a non-drinker, visit an "open" Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. In either case, visit a jail or prison as part of some philanthropic project and do something that actually helps the inmates. Almost all of them are either sub- scientific (statistics and correlations) or pseudo-scientific (psychoanalysis, attempts to "prove" that certain kinds of masculine misbehavior are very prevalent.) Eighty percent of straight college men have had penile-vaginal sexual intercourse. They have had an average of 11.5 partners. Average age for the first time was 17. [Average age for the non-college-bound is 15-16.] Twenty percent of sexually experienced college men say they have had heterosexual anal intercourse. Twenty percent of sexually experienced college women say they have had heterosexual anal intercourse. [That must be where all those Béã's come from!] Fam. Plan. Per. 24(3): 116, 1992. Most normal men are turned-on by lots of different things. This raises serious doubts about today's fad for using "arousal patterns" to identify sex criminals. Arch. Sex. Behav. 20: 137, 1991. [Several other articles document the same well-known truth.] If college women sign their names to a survey which includes the question "Have you ever experienced unwanted sexual activity?", only 6.7% answer in the affirmative. These are mostly women who have also been promiscuous and/or been pregnant and/or been mentally sick. The oh-so-politically-correct authors of the survey draw the incredible conclusion that many, many more college women are sexually assaulted but that the "nice girls" are all afraid to admit it, even in confidence. J. Am. College Health 40(4): 167, 1992. Among Mexican-American female college students, "11.4% reported being the victim of date rape" compared with 16.4% of Anglo-Americans; the difference was not statistically significant. "Unwanted sexual advances, other than intercourse, were reported by 36.6% of all female respondents, and 48.8% had experienced at least one kind of physical violence or threat in dating situations." J. Sex Marital Ther. 16(1): 44, 1990. In "acquaintance rape", (1) he's usually been drinking, and (2) she's usually been drinking. J. Am. College Health. 39(4): 165, 1991. Only men with certain personality problems will commit "acquaintance rape". The act itself is triggered when the man thinks the woman actually wants it. J. Am. College Health 40(4): 175, 1992. In an anonymous survey, 50% of women and 22% of men report at least one unwanted sexual experience during childhood. While there are personality differences between groups, they are complex, and the total pictures does not support the idea that supposedly having been "sexually abused" ruins your life. Arch. Psych. Nurs. 5(6): 331, 1991. Politically-correct researchers in South Carolina, armed with plethysmographs, discover that "42% of the males in the sample had engaged in verbal sexual coercion", whatever that is. Arch. Sex. College Health 37(4): 159, 1989. 6.9% of asymptomatic women at U. of South Florida have a positive screen for chlamydia. J. Am. College Health 37)(6): 288, 1989. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is all over campus and can be serious. J. Am. College Health 40(5): 227, 1992. In college women without warts, 11% still have HPV on board. [Men: You can catch it. It looks terrible, and you'll never, ever be rid of it.] J. Inf. Dis. 159(2): 293, 1989. "The prevalence of HSV-1 [fever blister] antibody was 37.2% in freshmen and 46.1% in fourth-year students; that for HSV-2 [genital herpes] antibody was 0.4% and 4.3% respectively." J. Inf. Dis. 162(2): 306, 1990. College-age men who grew in up in families where there was little emotional security often have difficulty forming intimate emotional bonds with women of their own age, despite their having normal sexual desires. This is a common source of secret shame and concern over being "deviant". When they are informed that the situation is common and about how it arises, the problem usually solves itself within a few years. Adolescence 25(99): 599, 1990. College students are outraged by a man snatching a kiss from an unwilling woman, and applaud a woman snatching a kiss from an unwilling man. ["PC" strikes again!] Arch. Sex. Behav. 19(3): 281, 1990. Researchers at your Kappa's alma mater found no real change in college women's sexual mores in the past ten years, except that almost half of all women now date men who use condoms. NEJM 322: 821, 1990. Among college men, 7% were supposedly sexually abused as boys, usually by a non-family member. Among serial rapists, 56% were abused as boys, more often by a family member. A majority of serial rapists begin by acting out in pre-adolescence with victims known to them, before moving on to strangers. This pre-adolescent behavior isn't the same as peer play. Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sci. 528: 277, 1988. Sex play with your sibling prior to age 13 doesn't seem to have any impact whatever on your adult sexuality. Arch. Sex. Behav. 18(5): 389, 1989. Somewhere between 20 and 40% of men have fooled around with another guy at least once (and often feel incredibly guilty and stigmatized as a result), but only maybe 5% of men have or want a male partner now. Science 243: 338, 1989. Among college-educated women, 42.7% have experienced multiple orgasms. Arch. Sex. Behav. 20(6): 527, 1991. From Albert Einstein C.O.M.: "The sexual mores of the contemporary college population have undergone some fundamental changes in the past twenty-vive years.... Sexual involvement between partners of the opposite sex has been sporadic, episodic, without commitment, and accompanied by a deliberate effort of both partners to suppress tender, romantic feelings and intimacy. The sources of this situation are linked to changes in five domains: the ethos, the ascent of women, advances in contraceptive methods, residential mobility, and changes in child-rearing patterns. This premeditated restraint of affect has led to a noticeable diminishment of gratification derived from sexual union. It has contributed to sexual apathy, to discord, and a substantial rise in the incidence of two types of psychiatric disturbance (1) depersonalization and (2) derealization. Sexual union, instead of enhancing sociability, acts as a barrier and inhibitor of enduring attachment and a sense of continuity. The repercussions on the social fabric are unexplored and merit systematic study. It is suggested that the prevailing sexual conventions of college-age youth clash with the fundamental urge to form human attachments; diminish and often shut out the experience of passion in sexual unions, and bring about inner turmoil that weakens self-confidence." Sound like B.S. to you, too? Adolescence 23(89): 99, 1988. * * * "The smoke that rises from the murderer's gun is the incense that every male offers to his God." -- Gloria Steinham's exact words at your Kappa's college graduation, 1973. On not being a jerk and ending up in court, or worse, over sex: The vast majority of men are responsible with their sexuality, and treat all women decently. The vast majority of women like men in general, and there will probably be one or more that will love you. This is all very, very good and nice. Unfortunately, some men on some occasions treat some women badly. Thanks to a combination of justifiable concern and demagoguery, this kind of behavior has now placed all men at a political disadvantage. Today's man must not only be a gentleman -- he must "love defensively". A man who is secure in his masculinity has no reason to feel upset if a particular woman, at a particular time, does not want to have sexual intercourse with him. One of the most un-masculine things you can do is to force yourself on a woman -- even if she has teased you. It is also very illegal -- the crime of rape. Rape is the sexual penetration of somebody else without that person's lawful consent, by force, fear, or fraud. In most jurisdictions, it still has to be your penis. But you do not have to have an erection, or ejaculate. You don't have to stick it all the way in, it does not have to be the woman's vagina, and it does not even have to be a female. Furthermore, just because she doesn't forcibly resist, or she already had you take off her clothes and feel her up, or everybody knows she's "easy", doesn't mean that she consents. If she says, "No", even if it sounds unconvincing, she doesn't consent. You have to stop whatever you were trying to do right away. What's more, if you know that she did consent but she changes her mind afterwards, many "sensitive and politically aware" people will assume you are in the wrong simply because you are a man. You can still be found guilty of rape and go to prison. Remember too: certain people can't lawfully consent. Retarded people, people who are drunk or stoned on drugs, or underage people cannot consent, and if you do it with them, it's statutory rape. Obviously, such behavior is also disgusting, hurtful, and un-masculine. Rape is a felony in both Kansas and Missouri. In Missouri, if you display a deadly weapon or inflict serious bodily harm, rape is a class A felony. They will lock you up for a long, long time. In both Kansas and Missouri, the age of consent for sex acts is 16. If you do it with a girl under age 16, you've committed a felony. Please remember she might lie about her age; if she did and she's 14 or 15 in Missouri, it's a defense, but it's still an ugly business. Rape, when it has really occurred, often has a devastating, longlasting emotional impact on the victim. No reasonable person would defend a rapist's behavior or argue that the act is anything but reprehensible. Feminists have managed to effect considerable changes in the rape laws. For example, a judge is no longer allowed to remind a jury of the obvious truth that it's easy to bring a false accusation of rape, and hard to defend against it. A woman can't usually be asked about her personal life. A husband can now be found guilty of raping his lawful wedded wife with whom he is living and who is financially dependent upon him. You will be told that "women never bring false charges of rape, because a woman would never lie or err about something so personal." Based on his performance or review of over 200 rape exams and lab results as a resident, your Kappa knows that many accusations of rape are (to put it mildly) inconsistent with the physical evidence. Nevertheless, "rape counsellors" encourage these women to press charges. Sadly, some men also take advantage of positions of power to try to get women to submit to them sexually. This is as un-masculine as rape, and as moronic. It's also highly illegal. It is also un-masculine to take advantage of your maleness to make a woman upset. Women are likely to become upset if they hear you talking dirty. Any time you've used your sexuality to annoy or take advantage of a co-worker, you've committed sexual harassment. Today's world rightly frowns on this kind of behavior, and you can and should end up in court. Of course, in today's world, there are financial incentives for people to complain of sexual harassment, so people's sensitivity to such things is likely to increase even further. Obviously, anyone who feels compelled to do sexual things with children has a duty to go at once to a psychiatrist with a good record for successfully treating this kind of problem. No one questions that doing sexual things with children is wrong and likely to cause some harm. No one questions that at least a few percent of people have really been victims. Currently, there is a push for adults who were molested as children to help bring the perpetrators to justice. Unfortunately, there is also a fashionable "mental health" cult using "New Age" techniques to "help people recover deeply repressed memories of having been sexually abused as children". According to these cultists, most emotional problems result for such trauma, denying this is proof that it happened, mental health can only be achieved by cooperating with the "self-help group"'s agenda, etc., etc. This is obvious quackery, but these people are starting to do grave harm to innocent people. Further, wantonly accusing your "ex-" of sexually abusing a child is now commonplace in custody battles. Ask a lawyer. If you are accused of rape, or sexually abusing a child (someone else's, or your own), or sexual harassing a co-worker, you can now be hooked up to a pressure gauge ("plethysmograph"), read a series of dirty stories and/or shown dirty pictures, and your "arousal pattern" used as evidence against you in a court of law. Your Kappa notes that there's a disturbing lack of proper scientific controls in these "studies". If you have to counsel someone who has been mistreated sexually, or if something has happened to you, your Kappa was taught that the key to recovery is to remind the victim that he or she is (we can hope) still physically and neuronally intact and can go on with a normal life, loving and being loved like any other decent person. (Once again, this may not form part of anybody's political agenda or make money nowadays. But it's the truth.) Here are your Kappa's suggestions on avoiding accusations of a sex crime: 1. Never affectionately touch somebody else's child, even in play. 2. Never be alone with somebody else's child. 3. Never be alone with a female co-worker with the door closed. 4. Never touch any subordinate unless he or she has touched you first. 5. Never mention anything sexual at work in mixed company if you can possibly avoid it. 6. Never have a woman you are not dating alone in your car without a chaperon. 7. Never speak rudely or roughly to a date. 8. Never date a woman who is nuts. On not becoming an unwanted parent: A responsible man knows that fertility control is as much his business as hers. There's no lack of treatises on birth control. Here's a short summary. Coitus interruptus The withdrawal method. Emotionally un- satisfying, and plus, it simply doesn't work. At least 50,000 sperms are released at the time of intromission. Any one of them can change your life forever. Rhythm method Irreverently called "Vatican roulette", and notoriously ineffective even when pursued most "scientifically". Condoms Pretty good, provided that they're worn (and not kept in the wallet), and that they don't slip off. Some guys like using them, some don't. Female condoms Ever seen one? The latest thing for savvy women. Diaphragm Pretty good, as long as it gets used, with the spermicide. Sponge Pretty good, but again, it has to be used. Intra-uterine device Unfashionable now that we know more about the ecology of actinomycete "ray fungi". The pill The most reliable form of reversible birth control. Side effects are uncommon, but can be lethal. The morning-after pill Unpleasant, dangerous, and unreliable, but better than nothing. * * * What is "rape"? What is "sexual harassment"? How have minority groups been helped by the Greek system? Are you in an honor fraternity? A service fraternity? How many of the UMKC honor and service fraternities do you know? Do you know anyone who is a member of an post-college adult fraternal group? -- an ethnic or sectarian group? -- a Masonic organization? -- one of the "animal lodges" or other lodge? * * * Try singing "Our Little Crescent Girl", one of the songs from the Lambda Chi song book. How are these faces of love different? Similar? Look back at the four Greek words for "LOVE" in Unit VI. Which of these four contribute to "brotherhood"? How? How will you maintain your peer bonds after college? Is there any suggestion in the second half of the "creed" that "perfect brotherly love" might transcend the boundaries of Lambda Chi Alpha? Take an hour or two with your Big Brother and drive around town, noting the locations and names of various statues, monuments, prominent buildings, etc., etc. ADAPTABILITY "Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves." -- Matthew 10:16 "To the Jews I became like a Jew to win over Jews; to those under the law I became like one under the law -- though I am not under the law -- to win over those under the law. To those outside the law I became like one outside the law -- though I am not outside God's law but within the law of Christ -- to win over those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some." -- I Corinthians 9:20 "For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light." -- Luke 16:8 (Quotations from the "New American Bible") COOPERATION "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." -- Matthew 18:20 "I urge you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose." -- I Corinthians 1:10 "Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ, for whom the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the body's growth and builds itself up in love." -- Ephesians 4:15-16 "We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works." -- Hebrews 10:24 LOYALTY "Let us hold unwavering to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy." -- Hebrews 10:23 "Understand, then that the LORD, your God, is God indeed, the faithful God who keeps his merciful covenant down to the thousandth generation toward those who love him and keep his commandments." -- Deuteronomy 7:9 "Then I saw the heavens opened, and there was a white horse; its rider was called 'Faithful and True'. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" -- John 14:12 JUSTICE "To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice." -- Proverbs 21:3 "Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just, for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed." -- Isaiah 56:1 "Let justice surge like water, and goodness like an unfailing stream." -- Amos 5:24 "But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust." -- Matthew 5:44-45 NOTE: The word "Justice" does not occur in the New Testament (KJV). By my count, the word "Mercy" appears 55 times.
