Basic Histology -- Stratified Squamous Epithelium Next Home Back

We are not going to make you learn the names of the various layers of a common stratified squamous epithelium yet.

Most of these epithelia have an region where you can appreciate the desmosomes, as prickles between the cells. The prickle effect is a fixation artifact caused by shrinkage of cells which nevertheless remain joined by their desmosomes. We call this the "spiny layer" or the "prickle layer".

At the top of stratified squamous epithelia is a layer of dead cells (i.e., the nuclei are pyknotic or gone).

This is a stratified squamous epithelium.
