DarkSun 3.5 Character Generator
This little program is my gift to my fellow-gamers, and my way of saying "thank you" to the hobby's developers. Over a quarter-century, I have enjoyed a cordial relationship with people at TSR/WOTC. In return, I'm glad to help make the process of character creation easier for everyone. Happy adventuring!
This big javascript program runs best on "Netscape" browsers. It does not work on "Opera" or "Safari"; if someone can tell me what I need to do to make the code compatible with these browsers, I would be most grateful.
If you want to save your character's html file to your hard drive, Netscape seems to work better. Many people have found that saving them as Word documents works well. For some browsers, the best way to save the character sheet is to select "print" and save in .pdf format.
Please accept my apologies if this large program fails to load on your computer.
Please be sure your browser is javascript-enabled. You may need to turn off your anti-popup program.
The "Dark Sun" campaign setting was developed in the late 1980's and early 1990's. It seems to me that the central story line reflected the "politically-correct" ideology of the moment. Science had caused not one but two different kinds of worldwide environmental disasters on Athas. The evil rulers sought to exterminate the racial minorities for no reason. The religions promoted by the professional clergy are about business and cynical politics rather than anything better. The world's only hope is nature mysticism. And so forth.
Whatever you may think of the subtext, "Dark Sun" realized a deadly, post-holocaust world in need of heroes. Brom's fantastic art (reproduced here from his fansites) helped give the world its distinctive look. The anti-heroes Borys and Hamanu achieved some tragic dignity as they tried to ensure the survival of their communities despite supernatural perils and extreme shortages of water and metal. You'll need to decide for yourself whether Korgunard was a Christ figure. But I am not the only person who was deeply moved by Lynn Abbey's story of King Hamanu's becoming a monster and finally winning back his humanity.
The "Dark Sun" campaign setting has been revived in "Dragon" and "Dungeon" magazine simultaneously with the release of "The Expanded Psionics Handbook". Remember that Athasian elves tend to be taller than humans, rather than shorter. For more on my generators, see my main D&D 3.5 generator.
