Dragon Chess
King Royal unit. Moves one square orthogonally or diagonally on the middle board only, or directly up or down one square.
Warrior As FIDE pawns, but no initial double move. Stays on the middle board. Promotes to Hero.
Hero On the middle board, moves one or jumps two squares diagonally. On any board, moves one square diagonally in all three directions.
Sylph On the top board, moves/captures as a Berolina pawn, no initial double move. It may capture by moving straight down to the middle board. It may return to the upper board without capturing by moving straight up, or returning to any empty square where a friendly sylph began play.
Griffin On the top board, a 3,2 leaper. Between top and middle board, may move/capture one square diagonally (all three directions).
Dragon Moves and captures as FIDE bishop or king. May capture a unit on the square below, or orthogonally adjacent to it, without moving. Confined to upper level.
Oliphant As a FIDE rook. Confined to the middle board.
Unicorn As a FIDE knight. Confined to the middle board.
Thief As a FIDE bishop. Confined to the middle board.
Cleric On any board, moves and captures as a FIDE king. Also moves and captures one square up or down.
Mage On the middle board, moves and captures as a FIDE bishop. On the upper or lower boards, moves and captures one square orthogonally. May move and capture one or two squares straight up or down; if moving between upper and lower boards, may not pass through an occupied square.
Paladin On the middle board, moves and captures as a knight or king. On the upper or lower boards, moves and captures as a king. May move and capture between boards as a knight.
Dwarf As a pawn, plus one square to either side non-capturing. No initial double move. Does not promote.
Basilisk Forward straight or diagonally one square to capture, backward straight one square without capturing. Immobilizes any hostile unit above it.
Elemental On the lower board, one square in any orthogonal direction to move or capture. One square diagonally without capturing. If the square directly orthogonal is unoccupied, it may move or capture to the square just beyond or the square just above. On the middle board, only if the square below is unoccupied, it may move or capture to any square orthogonally adjacent to the square below.
